Proximus customer on holiday surfs massively after cancellation of roaming costs

With the abolition of roaming costs in the European Union, Belgians feel much less inhibited to call, surf and text on holidays. This is evident from figures from Proximus that map the telephone and data traffic this summer. The use of mobile data in particular is on a steep rise, but the number of calls and text messages is also rising sharply in comparison with last year.

Six times more mobile data than in 2016

The most notable increase can be noted in mobile data traffic. More and more customers are surfing on holiday and using their favorite apps like at home. For example, the data usage of Proximus customers in the EU increased sixfold in the months of July and August compared to the same period last year.

The figures follow the same trend as Scarlet's recent findings, which already decided in May 2016 to remove the roaming costs. After a year, the subsidiary of Proximus saw the average use of mobile internet abroad quadrupled.

SMS traffic has also increased considerably since the disappearance of roaming costs. In comparison with the same period in 2016, Proximus recorded a doubling of the number of text messages in July and August. The number of foreign calls within the EU has increased by 30%.
No longer afraid of higher invoice

The roaming consumption of Belgians within the European Union has been on the rise in recent years. Last year, Proximus, in line with a series of changes to European regulations, implemented a substantial reduction in roaming tariffs. Even then, this decision was accompanied by an increase in data consumption and telephone traffic.

In spite of this, roaming tariffs for a long time constituted an obstacle for the consumer, who feared a higher invoice. The abolition of roaming charges seems to have definitely stopped this. Thanks to the measure, Proximus customers within the European Union (+ Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) can call, surf and text without any extra roaming costs. In the latest Proximus offer, customers can also use their favorite app for free and unlimited throughout Europe.

Always and everywhere connected

The fact that mobile data traffic abroad has exploded since the disappearance of roaming is hardly surprising. The use of mobile data in the Netherlands has also increased exponentially in recent years. People want to be more and more connected, and use their smartphone more and more intensively, including for sharing photos and videos or streaming music and TV. Nearly 70% of Proximus mobile customers use a smartphone, an increase of 10% over the last 18 months.

It shows that the abolition of the roaming costs meets the changed expectations of the consumer, who wants to be able to connect to the internet anytime, anywhere and from any device. Proximus has already responded to this by providing more data volume in its packs, and today has an adjusted offer for everyone's needs and needs.
