The new BITT educational center in Hardewijk opened on Monday 11 April 2016. With a 'high five' on the robot Meccanoid, deputy Michiel Scheffer and Piet Mosterd, chairman of Platform Techniek Noordwest Veluwe, gave the starting signal for the Science and Technology Experience Center.

The BITT Foundation (Experience, Inspiration, Technology and Future) wants to make young people enthusiastic about science and technology. BITT has set up a workshop space in Harderwijk in a part of the building of De Techniek Academie at Westeinde 100. Here, school groups are received to do an activity where they experience that almost everything has to do with technology.

Plastic Soup and Care Robot

The workshops are offered to groups 7 and 8 of primary education and classes 1 and 2 of secondary education. Topics that will be discussed are: plastic soup, climate change, care robot and programming. The starting point is learning and designing learning. Creativity is very important here.

Science and technology

The experience center helps the schools in the region to give substance to science and technology in the lessons. These themes must be included in the school curriculum per 2020. The Province of Gelderland has granted a subsidy to set up the center. Schools contribute to the costs of a workshop. Companies in the region are also enthusiastic. They have promised materials, manpower and money to continue to develop BITT.

Learning through discovery

Michiel Scheffer is enthusiastic: 'Technology has the future. A smart economy needs smart people. BITT allows young people to get acquainted with technology in a playful manner. Experience by doing. Learning through discovery. Even pancakes can now be printed in 3D! '
