Researchers from the Erasmus Research Center for Media, Culture and Communication (ERMeCC) are organizing the symposium on Surveillance, Big Data and Digital Rights at the Erasmus University on Tuesday 24 March 2015 . The symposium program includes keynote lectures by three prominent scientists and activists in this field, Prof. David Lyon, Dr. Marisol Sandoval and Dr. Benjamin Mako Hill. The documentary The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz is also shown. .

The speakers discuss countersurveillance, how it creates and denounces various social relationships, and how business practices in the field of social (in) responsibility and digital rights activists respond to these challenges. The symposium offers media and communication researchers and other interested parties the opportunity to learn more about the current state of affairs in surveillance and surveillance research in relation to the use of new and social media. The program also includes a practical workshop on tools and apps for countersurveilllance, and a public screening.
