VMware calls in Cisco for its data center ambitions. The virtualisation software provider wants to move up the data center and has unveiled its Virtual Datacenter operating system (VDC OS) and its cloud computing initiative vCloud. It also extends virtualization to the network layer.

The network layer - and the intelligence in it thanks to policies - is an important element in data centers. VMware has also cited Cisco for better and safer management of network traffic from and between virtual machines (VMs). The Cisco Nexus 1000v is the result of the collaboration between the manufacturer of virtualization software and the supplier of network equipment.
