Nieuwegein, 14 September 2016 - Securing digital infrastructure and data is receiving increasing attention within the European Union. Measures in this area can, however, be at the expense of European rights and values. To prevent this, the European security company F-Secure, together with ten European partners, is setting up the CANVAS (Constructing an Alliance for Value-driven Cyber Security) consortium. The project was launched on 13 September during a kick-off event in Zurich, Switzerland.
Participants from all kinds of scientific backgrounds are involved in CANVAS, including Delft University of Technology. Together they will structure and disseminate research with regard to ethical, legal, empirical and technological aspects of cyber security. The information gathered thereby helps inform policy markers, experts and the public about the development of security technologies and guidelines that offer security without compromising on needs such as free access to information.
Making security more effective and more practical
"Everyone currently struggles to secure digital assets, " says Sean Sullivan, security advisor at F-Secure. "Doing nothing is not an option given the possibilities that attackers have today. Too heavy security can also harm innocent people and companies that want to take advantage of new technology. Governments, companies and the public therefore ask the European cybersecurity sector to develop methods that make security more effective and more practical. CANVAS will help answer this question. "
F-Secure will play an integral role in CANVAS and help the consortium to collect opinions from experts from the cybersecurity industry. Insight gained by the consortium is shared by F-Secure with other experts in the sector. The security company also runs an international workshop in which the current security challenges of companies are discussed. Finally, F-Secure shares expertise in creating security tools, including a training curriculum and a large-scale open online course.
The consortium receives funding for three years from the European Union and the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation. CANVAS is being set up alongside a wide range of other cyber security initiatives in Europe. These include new regulations such as the Network and Information Security (NIS) Directive and a recently introduced public-private partnership between the European Commission and the European Cyber Security Organization, which is expected to jointly invest € 1.8 billion in cybersecurity.
Dr. Markus Christen, Senior Research Fellow of the University of Zurich and project coordinator of CANVAS, states that the consortium will contribute to these initiatives and the European continent as a whole. The project will help shareholders to find the balance between cyber security and European rights and values. "Cyber security is becoming increasingly important now that more people and communities are more dependent on digital infrastructure than ever before, " says Christen. "Values such as autonomy, privacy and equality must be maintained while we make systems and data safer. CANVAS will help people, companies and policy makers to balance these interests. "
