This is how a scale-up talent attracts in times of tightness

There is a shortage on the labor market, also for start-ups. These are the personnel experiences of a scale-up within the financial world.
The world is digitizing in rapid transit. The digitization wave is propelled by start-ups and scale-ups: young, fast-growing companies with a great appetite for (technical) talent. The demand for good people far exceeds the supply, both in IT and online services. How do you ensure that you as an entrepreneur within that tight market still know how to bind talent to you?
Getting the right talent is indispensable for the growth of your company. Because in order to get further, you as an entrepreneur will have to hand over tasks. Make sure that you as an entrepreneur know where your strength lies, and what you can leave to others better. Not only because there are only so many hours in a day, but also because there are people who can do certain tasks better than you. Moreover, with every new employee you get a fresh look at home that enriches your company. Give others the confidence to help you build your business and free your hands for the next step.
Talent demands more and more from a company
But when it comes to recruiting talent, it is not just about winning. Also think carefully about what you have to offer them. We see that people demand a lot from their work and employer. Today's talents really dare to demand and are critical to us as potential employers. For example, they want the ambitions and values of the company to fit with their own. They want to work in a place and in a team where they feel comfortable. Moreover, they carefully analyze whether there will be enough work in your business in the future. To give talents a perspective, it can help you to connect with relevant brands within your field. For example, we participated in the AWS Summit BeNeLux 2018 of Amazon. We notice that IT talent finds this interesting.
What should a scale-up look for when sourcing
Scale-ups like New10 are young companies that are experiencing substantial growth. This dynamic requires people who can help with building from day one. So look for people with an entrepreneurial spirit, people who can make something out of nothing. For example, we find it important that our people understand what it takes to grow with New10. And: that they then do what is necessary to achieve that growth. So you are looking for people who help build your business, but where do you find them?
Provide the right mix of talent
When you know who you are looking for and where you can find them, composition is of great importance. How do different talents complement each other based on their expertise? At New10, for example, we want to help entrepreneurs grow and we do this with online business loans. Of course, talent in the area of credit is of great importance. People with experience in the financial world, who understand and can apply the right models. But if you go online, look for people who know how customers behave on the internet, who understand how to get people to your online store. A mix between permanent and flexible employment can be effective. This way you can supplement the fixed expertise with talent that you need at that moment. With the right mix you let your business grow further.
Do not be afraid to look across the border
Do not limit your search for talent to your own market, but also look internationally. First, you simply find a wider range of talent. Secondly, all these different backgrounds provide wonderful synergy. Almost 20 nationalities walk around with us. Our Lead Front-end Developer comes from Brazil, our Head of Engineering is a Russian and we have an Agile Coach from Italy, who has lived and worked in 5 countries. This brings us much more than we expected. Thanks to our international team, we are building things that we had not thought possible. You simply have more different perspectives due to the cultural differences within the teams.
This way you bind developers to your company
But how do you unite these talents so that they get a shared goal? We have had a lot of Start With Why from Simon Sinek. We notice in interviews with candidates that our purpose is important to them. What drives us to do what we do? Especially when you fight as a corporate start-up against parties like Booking.com or Tesla. For talents it is often not in the highest salary, but in the sense of value they can add to the course of the potential employer. The right environment also plays an important role. Talents want to feel at home within the organization and get the space to be who they are.
