SAN FRANCISCO, June 2, 2014 - Apple today released the iOS 8 SDK, the largest release for developers ever with more than 4, 000 new APIs. This allows developers to create fantastic apps and add even more features. Examples of important expansion features are Message Center widgets and functions for keyboards from other vendors. In addition, robust frameworks such as HealthKit and HomeKit are being introduced in this release. iOS 8 also includes Metal, a new graphics technology that enhances the performance of the A7 chip and Swift, a powerful new programming language. "Worldwide, more than 800 million iOS devices have been sold, so this offers developers tremendous opportunities, " said Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering. "This is the largest iOS release since the opening of the App Store. The iOS 8 SDK contains more than 4, 000 new APIs, including fantastic new frameworks, more expansion possibilities and a revolutionary new programming language. "With iOS 8, developers have robust frameworks including HealthKit APIs that allow health and fitness apps to exchange data. You can set each app to use specific data from another app for an even more comprehensive view of your physical condition and your workouts. For example, the app for measuring your blood pressure can exchange data with your doctor's app, such as the Mayo Clinic app, so that your doctor can provide optimal care. "We think the Apple HealthKit will change the way the health industry communicates with people, " said physician John Noseworthy, president and CEO of Mayo Clinic. "We are proud of our pioneering role in using this innovative technology in our Mayo Clinic app." While HealthKit combines health data to keep you in top shape, HomeKit provides optimal support for your accessories at home. HomeKit provides a general protocol, a secure way to connect devices and the ability to easily manage individual devices or groups of devices at home. In addition, integration with Siri® is supported. For example, you can say to Siri that you are "going to bed" to automatically turn off the lights, lock the doors, close the garage door and lower the heating. "We are thrilled to be part of the next step in home automation in a secure and integrated way, " said Eric Rondolat, CEO of Philips Lighting. "With HomeKit, we can further extend Philips Hue's lighting capabilities, making it easier to connect devices anywhere in the home and control them via Siri." Developers can further enhance user capabilities with iOS extensions, including new sharing options, custom photo filters, custom actions and APIs for documents. Developers can now add their own widgets to Message Center. Additional layouts and input methods are available for keyboards from other suppliers. Gaming makes a huge leap forward in iOS 8 with Metal, a new graphics technology that optimizes the performance of the A7 chip. Because draw calls with Metal are executed no less than ten times faster, well-known game developers can finally make their 3D console games available for mobile devices. For lighter games, iOS 8 now includes SceneKit, which makes it easy to create fun 3D games, and major expansions of SpriteKit, including field forces, physical properties per pixel and inverse kinematics. Swift is a powerful new programming language for iOS and OS X that makes developers easier than ever to create great apps. Swift, developed for Cocoa and Cocoa Touch, combines the performance and efficiency of compiled languages with the simplicity and interactive capabilities of popular scripting languages. With Swift, developers can program safer and more reliable. Whole categories with common programming errors are now a thing of the past. Swift can also be combined with Objective-C code, so developers can easily integrate Swift into existing apps. With Xcode Playgrounds the output of Swift code is shown directly, so that it can be programmed interactively in Swift. iOS 8 also includes Touch ID APIs to securely monitor the identity of app users, protect login and user data, and decrypt keychain items. In iOS 8, the identity of a user can be checked on the basis of a fingerprint, while the fingerprint data remain secure in the Secure Enclave. Other iOS 8 features for developers include: • PhotoKit, which allows developers to leverage the robust framework of the built-in Photos app for better performance, non-destructive operations and the ability to read data from the photo library and write data to it ; • new Camera APIs that offer developers even more options for controlling focus, white balance and lighting; • CloudKit, a comprehensive and scalable backend solution that ensures that developers no longer have to program server code or manage servers; and • new App Store features for developers, such as app previews, app bundles, the new iTunes Connect with free analysis features, and TestFlight for beta testing of pre-release apps. Users of iPhone, iPad and iPod touch have access to the revolutionary App Store, which offers access to more than 1.2 million apps in 155 countries. The App Store attracts more than 300 million visitors every week and iOS users have downloaded more than 75 billion apps. Participants in the iOS Developer Program can download the iOS 8 beta software and SDK directly from developer.apple.com. This autumn, iOS 8 will be available as a free software update for iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPod touch (5th generation), iPad 2, iPad with Retina display, iPad Air, iPad mini and iPad mini with Retina display. iCloud Photo Library and iCloud Drive use your iCloud storage, the first 5 GB of which is free. Functions and features can be changed. Some features may not be available in all regions or languages. Participants in the iOS and OS X Developer Program can download the beta version of Swift from developer.apple.com. The final version will be released this autumn. Apps with Swift code can be submitted to the App Store and Mac App Store when iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite are available.
